Last night, 11/22/12,  I was again a guest on Indian Bob’s Recovery Radio Raw which discusses all things related to 12 step recovery. On our continuing journey to discussing the 12 steps as they pertain to all addictions, we were discussing step 3 and the saying Let Go and Let God came up a few times.

So what does Let Go and Let God mean to a sex addict or a sex and love addict in recovery?

Our discussion focused on the principles of step 3 which I know to be Faith, Hope and Love.

Faith is having confidence or trust in a person, entity, concept, idea or thing. A belief that is not based on proof

Hope is the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life

Love Love is a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection

When I have faith in God, or you may choose higher power, I know something greater than me will lead the way, I don’t need to nor should I ever had attempted to run my life. When I allow hope into my life, I can believe that my God can and will create the outcomes in my life according to His will for my life…not my will! When I love God and love myself, I can then love others. In the service of God and others, true love begins to penetrate our being as we become selfless not selfish and we learn the meaning of humility, being humble, being less than or equal to…not greater than.

When I begin to accept life as being exactly the way it’s supposed to be at this moment and realize God has it under control, that’s when I can truly Let Go of all the struggles, challenges and fears I have and Let God take care of them for me. I don’t have to worry about it.

While in treatment at Sante Center for Healing in Argyle, TX a very wise therapist, Victoria, in response to my struggle in trying to figure out how to work and live step 3 was this: “Scott, you just do the legwork and let God take care of the rest.” That finally made sense to me…
