Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over sex and love addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.

Note that in each of the 3 popular 12 step fellowships for recovery from Sex Addiction: Step 1 defines the addiction a little different. In SAA (Sex Addicts Anonymous) We admitted we were powerless over addictive sexual behavior. In SLAA (Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous) We admitted we were powerless over sex and love addiction. In SA (Sexaholics Anonymous) We admitted we were powerless over lust.

The spiritual principle around step 1 is Honesty.

To admit powerlessness over the addiction is being honest. To define and recognize how life had become unmanageable in every way requires complete and total honesty.

Admitting you have a problem is being honest and for some, it’s the first time they are honest about their addiction.

To me, step 1 is all about Honesty. Being honest first with myself, as to the powerlessness over my addiction and second being honest with every person and every aspect and area of my life.

It’s not enough to just work the 1st step and be honest and admit my powerlessness over my addiction, I have to realize that if I engage in my acting out behaviors or live life on my terms, then life becomes unmanageable.Recovery from Sex Addiction Step 1

When acting out in obsessive, compulsive and unwanted sexual behaviors, life is unmanageable and we are powerless over our addiction.

In working step 1, most people define powerless and unmanageability and list the ways in which their addiction had caused their life to become unmanageable. They also tell a brief story about how they became powerless over their addiction and how their life became unmanageable. It helps to remind oneself of how the unmanageability manifests itself in your life and what it does to destroy your life in every area.

Step 1 is a daily freeing way to live life. It’s a 2 step process admitting the powerlessness of the disease and the unmanageability. If I act out or use, I have no idea what’s going to happen, where I’m going to end up, how long I’ll be there and who’s going to get hurt. The end result always is powerlessness.

Step 1 Prayer

God, my name is (name) and I am a precious child of God and I need your help today to break free from the bondage of sin and fill my heart with you, your word and the holy spirit.

You can of course edit this prayer to replace God with any being you believe in or just replace it with I am a precious human being and I need help…

This prayer is all about asking for help, being honest where you are and wanting help to live a better life.
