Recovery from Sex Addiction Step 2Step 2 Recovery from Sex Addiction

Step 2: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

The spiritual principles behind step 2 are Faith and Hope:

Faith is having confidence or trust in a person, entity, concept, idea or thing.  A belief that is not based on proof.

Hope is the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life.

For a sex addict, Hope is very important. The hope to know there is a way to restore self to sanity, for after all, much of the life of an addict can be defined as insane.

Before coming into the program I had no faith, I didn’t trust anyone or anything, especially not a Power greater than myself. I thought I was the power…

I also had no hope of stopping my addictive obsessive, compulsive and unwanted sexual behaviors

In the depths of my addiction I didn’t believe in any power greater than myself. I thought I was the power…Little did I know there was a power greater than myself who could and would restore me to sanity. A loving God, a God of my understanding who loves me unconditionally. This realization is a blessing and a wonderful addition to a life formerly empty of any Faith and Hope.

In working step 2, most people discuss what they choose to believe as a Higher Power, what can restore them to sanity. Is it God, Buddha, Muhammad, Allah, The Great Spirit, The Universe, The Great Unknown, Nature, Mother Earth, The Group, A fellow…It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you choose something greater than yourself and realize you can be restored to sanity.

Step 2 says my thinking is incorrect, I’m insane in what I do and have done and it’s going to take some time and some work to get over my incorrect thinking. Hence, the came to believe.  I have work to do in order to discovery what this power greater than myself is.

Step 2 Prayer

God, I am standing at the turning point right now, give me your protection and care as I abandon myself to you and give up my old ways just for today.

This prayer allows us to realize we want to make this change and we want someone bigger than us to give ourselves to stop our old reliance on self and for today to live a new life.
